Southend Central Museum is putting on an exhibition of bathing suits, this summer, covering 150 years of beach wear; Life’s A Beach – An exhibition of beachwear from the collections 7 August – 2 October 2010. These fabulous photos are of Mrs. Plume, the donor of the collection, wearing some of her bathing costumes.

Aren't they beautiful? It just makes me so excited about the summer, I love the beach, and this just made me think of a wonderful sunny day last year, spent in Leigh-on-Sea, in the best company possible. Southend Central Museum, Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS2 6, www.southendmuseums.co.uk tel. 01702 347418.

I heard about this via the Dress and Textile Specialist Newsletter, because we get it at work, and it dawned on me that there are many lovers of vintage fashion out their who may not know of it, so I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you for this! My boyfriend is an Essex lad, so maybe we can combine a visit to the relatives with a gawp at the exhibition. And the newsletter looks awesome!

So... I'm doing a PhD on early modern textiles and dress, and I had never heard of the Dress and Textile Specialist. Slightly embarrassing. Thanks for sharing! Also, I love the voluminous Victorian bathing suits - they remind me a little of modern Iranian women going swimming in chadors: both must be a serious impediment to the butterfly stroke!

Very glad you both enjoyed it! There seems to be some amazing exhibitions going on at some less well known museums. I feel a few day trips coming on!
